Through the Soundwatch Program, I lead research on vessel activity and whale behavior in the Salish Sea, with a particular focus on endangered Southern Resident killer whales and other large cetaceans including humpback, gray, and minke whales. My work investigates the different roles and anthropogenic impacts of various vessel types and activities on sensitive marine species and environments. These data are used to assess awareness of regulations and better inform management measures for the marine environment.

In the Arctic Ocean, I work with the WAVE Project to collect data on Arctic marine mammals, vessels, and their interactions in the polar environment. This research is critical for the proactive protection of this region, a growing concern in the face of shrinking sea ice cover and expanding vessel traffic.

Further south, I work in collaboration with Cook Islands Natural Heritage Trust in the establishment of the Marine Wildlife Sightings Network, a platform for detailed reporting on wildlife in the area. This is a crucial component of environmental assessments throughout the island nation’s EEZ, encompassing over 750,000 square miles of ocean territory.
